Why Makumbaya?
We’ve chosen Makumbaya as the locus of our project due to several compelling factors:
- Makumbaya stands as a primarily Muslim community that unfortunately remains underserved.
- The local parents exhibit a strong desire to provide their children with a comprehensive Islamic education that’s contextualized for modern times.
- Presently, there’s a stark absence of facilities that cater to such specific educational needs.
Situated in Kombo North within the Western Region of the Gambia, Makumbaya is a semi-urban locale with limited educational institutions. While many children attend either mainstream schools or traditional Qur’anic centers, there’s an evident gap in offering formalized Islamic education integrated with an English-speaking curriculum.
By bridging this gap, we aim to equip these young minds with a sound Islamic foundation while also enabling them to serve the broader ummah, leveraging both English and Arabic language proficiencies.
